Zarcillejo - Palo de escoba (Brachyotum ledifolium)

Zarcillejo (Brachyotum sp.), along with its notable varieties such as Brachyotum lindenii and Brachyotum ledifolium, stands out as one of the most iconic plant groups of the páramos in Nariño, Colombia. These species are deeply rooted in the local culture and landscape, recognized by surrounding communities both in their wild and cultivated forms.

Among them, Brachyotum lindenii, commonly known as Palo de Escoba or Escoba, holds particular importance. Valued for its medicinal and ornamental properties, it is also widely used for its wood, which serves as firewood and is crafted into brooms—hence its name. In addition, the plant is used in the construction of living fences and other local applications, making it an integral part of daily life in high-Andean ecosystems.
