We met Jairo Ortega. A teacher who holds a bachelor's degree in Basic and Environmental Education as well as a Master's Degree in Educational Science, and is a specialist in ICT.
During this time, he talks about how páramos contribute to the water cycle.
Frailejones and the Flow of Life
Many people believe the water cycle relies solely on oceans and rivers, but it’s important to remember that plants also play a vital role through the process of photosynthesis. During this process, water is absorbed by the plant and later released through the leaves and stomata. Photosynthesis involves two phases: a morning cycle and a night cycle. A notable example is the frailejón, a plant species native to the moors, which absorbs significant amounts of water. This water eventually contributes to rivers and streams through precipitation, and as it evaporates, the entire water cycle continues.
