What's Some Representative Flora in Our Páramos | With Jairo Ortega

From Mosses to Lichens: The Secret World of Páramo Plants

The páramos are home to a rich variety of plant species—over 350 in total. Among them, frailejones are the most well-known and essential, as they play a key role in absorbing water and sustaining the ecosystem. However, they’re not the only important plants in this environment. Other species like horsetail, lycopodium, and mosses also contribute significantly to water retention. Additionally, lichens—a unique fusion of fungus and plant—are commonly found in these ecosystems and serve as a food source for certain animals. The páramos also host native and traditional flora used for medicinal purposes. One example is valerian, often thought of as a local remedy, which naturally grows in the moorland and is widely used to calm the nerves.
