The Mortiño, also known as Agraz Silvestre, is an endemic shrub species found in the páramos of Nariño. It produces small, edible berries with a distinctively acidic and refreshing flavor. These berries are not only a delicious wild fruit, but also hold cultural significance in traditional Andean cuisine.

One of the most iconic uses of Mortiño is in the preparation of Colada Morada—a traditional beverage made with cane syrup, flour, and assorted fruits, typically served with Guaguas de Pan (bread figures) during the Day of the Dead celebrations.

But Mortiño’s value goes beyond the culinary. Recent research highlights its high antioxidant content, which may contribute to cancer prevention and treatment. This makes it a potential superfruit both nutritionally and medicinally.
